Amalgam fillings have served dentistry well for decades and are the least expensive type of filling material. Today there is a trend away from amalgam, metal fillings because of concerns with their content and because they are not as aesthetically pleasing as some of the new materials. Because of their dark color they are not suitable for anterior fillings.
Tooth colored or resin fillings are becoming a standard in dentistry today. They materials available today are much more durable than those available ten years ago. They are best suited for smaller fillings that don’t extend over the ‘bumps’ or cusps of the tooth. They can be placed in either the front or posterior teeth.
